One really cool way that the GoPro Hero cameras have been used over and over again is for making videos from the point of view of the person wearing it. This is accomplished with the head straps and helmet mounts that let you attach the camera to your head and record the action as it happens, just the way you see it.
There is however another way to record point of view videos that puts the camera even more in the thick of the action. The mounting device used to do this is called the GoPro chest mount. It consists of a mounting plate attached to a harness that is worn around the chest and shoulders. When the harness is worn as it should be, the Hero Camera is mounted on the plate which is located right in the center of the chest.
If the chest mount is used to film an activity with lots of movement and action, it goes without saying that it is essential for the camera to be as stable as possible. That’s why this harness is fully adjustable letting you wear it as tight as you need. The mounting plate is also designed to be as solid as possible mainly for the same reasons. The goal is to make professional looking video, not some poorly filmed, homemade handheld shaky cam footage. Any unnecessary movement of the camera that doesn’t reflect the movement of the person wearing it simply isn’t good.
Since the GoPro housings are necessary to mount the Hero camera to any accessory (including the chest mount), it is possible to change the angle of the camera to either aim it higher or lower. Depending on what sport you practice and what you are trying to capture, this might be crucial. For example, mountain bikers who use the chest mount need to aim the camera upwards to compensate for the forward bent position they adopt during riding.
The fact that a chest mounted camera will show all the arm, hand and sometimes even knee movement, the resulting video gives an impression of being right in the middle of all the action. This is something that regular head and helmet mounts simply cannot provide, since they are higher up and above the actual action. This makes the GoPro chest mount very popular among skiers. Other athletes also make fantastic videos using it such as kayakers, skydivers, rafters and bike riders (motor or leg powered).
If you are looking for a way to take high action point of view shots, the chest mount might be what you are looking for. Keep in mind however that it really is just a harness with a mounting plate and that with a little creativity you can probably make yourself one at home.
